It is important to understand gestalt psychology as one of the underpinnings of the project because it helps us understand why IdeaOverflow has the potential to be a fundamental development: it facilitates the process of connecting, and thus more effectively closing, open gestalts, which, according to proponents of gestalt theory, is the fundamental human activity. Thus the system can be applied to facilitate ideation in virtually every creative endeavor. Moreover, realizing that IdeaOverflow is a gestalt-processing system, in conjunction with society of mind theory,  makes clear why it should have the capacity to naturally make ideation a collaborative process: even within an individual person’s mind, these theories posit, ideation is already a collaborative process between the agents in a person’s mind (which respectively voice each of the open gestalts a person currently has). Thus, with the right communication technology, it is not such a leap to see how the creative process can function smoothly across physically separate humans.
